When 理查德·马林,51年 graduated from Poly 70 years ago as an 18-year-old headed for Yale, he probably wasn’t thinking that one day 他的孙子 would come to Poly. 但, 今年6月4日, 他的孙子, 罗伯特·马格纳斯,21岁, will follow in his footsteps 和 receive his diploma at Poly’s 164th Commencement. This year also marks 理查德。’s 70th 校友 Reunion.

尽管理查德, as a member of the Class of 1951, looked forward to Poly’s first virtual Reunion, Robert was finishing his classes 和 getting ready for Senior Plan 和 a Graduation Party before Commencement. 理查德。 has attended as many Poly reunions as he could over the years, is a great supporter of Poly, 和 stays in touch with several of his Class of 1951 classmates including 彼得·马尔金,51岁. Thinking ahead to Reunion, 理查德。 said, “I continue to be grateful for the experience I had then.” That sentiment is echoed by 他的孙子, Robert, “Poly has meant a lot to both of us.”

理查德。, who started Poly in Grade 9, grew up in Flatbush 和 took a public bus to school, while Robert lives in Manhattan 和 travels on the Poly bus. And while 理查德。 ran track 和 played soccer, 棒球, 和 JV football at Poly, Robert is well known for being part of Concert Choir, singing a cappella at Coffeehouse, 和 his memorable roles in 上学校 plays 和 musicals such as Urinetown, The Laramie Project, 油脂.  “He has come to see me in every Poly production I have done,罗伯特说。, “even this year’s virtual productions of 爱,莎士比亚Songs for a New World.”

“Poly offers much more than any student could do,理查德说, noting this is as true today as when he was a student.

“He told me about a lot of small things that made his Poly experience special to him,罗伯特说 of his gr和father. “He was on the football team until he had a bad injury; afterward he was a star on the soccer team.”  They shared another Poly experience. “His favorite classroom was Room 108,罗伯特说, “because it was right above the b和 room 和 you can always hear them playing, which was something I would get to experience during my freshman 和 junior year history classes.” His gr和father also was Treasurer of the Oasis Society 和, 作为美术编辑, drew the cover for the 1951 通晓多国语言 年鉴. Robert has written for 多边形 而且是在 通晓多国语言 sophomore 和 senior years.

One thing that has not changed at Poly, 理查德。 said, is the quality of academics. “Poly was more important as a foundational experience, more than college,理查德说. Asked if he had given any advice to Robert during his time at Poly, the gr和father said, “Robert is a very diligent student, 比我更爱你.”

在耶鲁大学, 理查德。 went on to graduate from Yale Law School 和 began a long legal career at firms doing corporate 和 mergers & 并购工作, which gradually shifted to estates 和 trusts, continuing to this day at McLaughlin & 斯特恩.  And his hopes for 他的孙子? “I would like him to be happy with many friends 和 find a career that satisfies him.”

“The only advice he gave me was that I would love being here at Poly, 和 he was right,罗伯特说. “Many aspects about Poly might have changed since he graduated 70 years ago, such as Poly becoming a co-ed school, several building expansions, a more relaxed dress code, but we both have 和 still bond over our experiences through Poly.”

We hope 理查德。 和 Robert continue to share many more good memories of their time at Poly.
